Project 62 – Form Follows Function.
The aesthetic influence and ideology of modernist design can be experienced all around us today. From graphic design, furniture, architecture and even music and literature.
For me, modernist design, as with minimalism, is founded on the idea of simplicity and the concepts behind ‘form following function’ (or function dictating form). This can look very much like Project 62’s home furniture collection displayed on this very page.
When the modernist movement made its way into the home.
‘Modernism’ is the historical period between 1860 and 1970, where artists of the time formed a movement that influenced the approach to design. In actuality, it was the 1960’s when the modernist design movement really reached its peak and made its way into homes. And it was around then, believe it or not, that the first Target store was opened in 1962.
Celebrating this era, and Target’s first grand opening in Roseville, Minnesota. The Project 62 collection consists of items that embody the principles of modernist design and style. These items are only available at Target but can be purchased from around the globe. (See if your location qualifies)
The Complexities of Simple Things
The term modernism can often overlap in meaning or concept as the word itself implies – ‘something new’. And it is not just the physical structure of items such as tables, buildings, and chairs, but also textiles and graphic design, that modernism has an influence. Modernism can be described as not just a movement but a state of mind.
